FLASH FICTION CHALLENGE – Eminence

Thursdays have slowly become my favorite day of the week as it is the day that I feel I get to be the most creative because Carrot Ranch releases a new Flash Fiction writing challenge prompt every Thursday. I still spend plenty of time throughout the rest of the week working on my creative writing, but there is something about someone else telling you what to write about that really gets the creative juices flowing.

March 26, 2019, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that uses the word eminence. It’s a rich word full of different meanings. Explore how it sounds or how you might play with it. Go where the prompt leads!”

As I locked my office door and headed down the stairs to leave the building I heard all kinds of commotion coming from outside.

“What could be going on?!” I thought to myself.

When I stepped outside I saw a crowd of people surrounding a town car that was parked in front of the building next door. A thin blonde in a perfectly pressed skirt stepped out of the car and the crowd went wild. I did not know who she was, but based on the people around her, her eminence was clear. Maybe she was a celebrity chef?

For this weeks prompt I had to do a bit of research before I could begin. I have heard the word used a few times in the past, but after reading others who had already shared their flash fiction I had some conflicting thoughts on what eminence truly meant. I looked up several definitions and sentences in which the word was used though until I finally thought I had a good, strong understanding of it.

How do you think I did? I would love to hear any feedback or constructive criticism you may have for me! Share your flash fiction challenges with me in the comments!

  1. Literary art (creativity) thrives in a dynamic between readers, writers, and discussions, so I’m happy to hear you are experiencing its influence. Because I am also enjoying your responses. Good way to familiarize yourself with a little-used word. I like the twist you threw in, instead of a model or rock star, you suggest the eminence comes from chef celebrity.
